The Life & Legacy
Bettye Jean Sloan was born on September 15, 1941, to Henry and Charlie Louise (Miller) Sloan in Marshall, Texas.
Bettye would be the only child born of this union, which laid the foundation for her unique life journey. She
accepted Christ at an early age, learning the power of faith, love, and standing on God’s word. All things that would
serve her well later in life. Early in her childhood, her maternal grandparents, Charlie and Sadie (Norris) Miller,
stepped in to raise her for a period as her mother went west in search of a better opportunity for her and her
daughter. After a visit with her mother in San Francisco, California, during summer break, she loved it so much that
she wanted to stay and stay she did! Even at 15, when Bettye made up her mind to do something, there was no
stopping her. While attending Mission High, fate would intervene, and she would meet her future husband, William
Charles Randle. To this union, three children were born: Felecia Louise Rene, Steven Ray, and Jeffrey Darnell.
She raised her three children with all the fearlessness, energy, enthusiasm, and determination of a lioness. Bettye
worked for Bank of America corporate offices in San Francisco as an Executive Administrative Assistant. In this
position, she created the former logo used by Bank of America in the 60s-70s; after they discovered her design
talent. She would go on to become the Program Director for the San Francisco Bay View Community Center. In this
position, she worked diligently to bring in several amazing and vital programs that served the needs of the
surrounding community. Bettye’s focus was always her three children. Leading by example, she instilled in them
that you must work hard, respect others, and obey God’s word. Bettye always wanted the very best for her children
and stood ready to storm any door that smelled like opportunity for them. She knew no greater joy than her three
children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had a special relationship with her son Jeffrey, her youngest;
their love for one another had no comparison and never wavered.
The last several years of her life were spent in the compassionate, attentive, devoted, and loving care of her middle
son, Steven. With the ever-watchful eye of Jeffery, who could be heard often scolding her when Steven was not
around. Saying, “You know you're supposed to have that walker thing, you're going to fall, you're going to fall,
Mama”. Some say that Steven and Bettey were like the dynamic duo, facing the daily challenges together. He has
devoted his life over the past several years to the daily care of his mother. Days that were not easy, times when he
felt alone; yet, standing like a warrior each day ready for battle! Never far away, a phone call, or airplane ride, big
sister Felecia was always there to lend a helping hand with being the medical liaison, an ear to listen and read
between the lines, a whipping board for the hard days, and with a 2 am prayerful tear to God to watch over her
brothers and mother in the midnight hour!
Bettye was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and beloved son-in-law, Dwayne Drew. She leaves to
cherish her memory a daughter, Felecia Drew of Dallas, TX; two sons: Jeffrey and Steven Randle of Richmond, CA;
four grandchildren, Snow Randle of Atlanta, GA, Iesha Randle of Richmond, CA, Jourdan Randle of American
Canyon, CA, Charlie Randle of Richmond, CA; nine great grandchildren: Rico, Gabriel, Malaysia ‘Sadia’ Evans,
and Freda Buggs all of Richmond, CA, Jakari Lomax, Me’Arah, Sonnique, and Mi’kel Santillan of Atlanta, GA,
and Ma’Liyah Watts of Richmond, CA; along with family and friends.
