Chun-Yan Feng, born in Beijing, China on December 19, 1955, transitioned in Oakland, Ca at 3am on December 4, 2023. She was 67 at passing and is survived by her only daughter and daughter-in-law.
Chun-Yan was a survivor of the Chinese Cultural Revolution and put into a labor camp as a child and through her teens. Unable to obtain an education because of this tragedy, she taught herself how to play the flute and sew in order to work in an orchestra and then in the fashion and upholstery industry.
She is the paragon of the American immigrant dream come true. As a single mom who divorced her husband because he was abusive to their daughter, she literally worked everyday to make ends meet to build a better life for her daughter. In fact, when they immigrated to the US, she didn’t speak English, had no family here, and wasn’t aware of social service for practical support. But yet she persevered despite all odds to ensure that her daughter was able to go to college, get a double doctorate, and obtain a successful career.
Chun-Yan sacrificed all that she could for her family. She was gentle, kind, open minded, loving, and accepting of people from all walks of life, especially the queer community. She will be loved and missed by many across the world.
