Dr. Leonard Fisher Obituary

Dr. Leonard Hugo Fisher, Jr. was born in Caldwell, Kansas to Leonard H. Fisher Sr. and Mildred Becker Fisher on January 30, 1932. He was the second of ten children. He passed away on Sept. 6, 2024 while on vacation in California, at the age of 92.

Leonard completed eighth grade at St. Joseph's School in Wichita, KS and then spent one year at St. Clement's Novitiate, in Desoto, Missouri. Following that, he spent 6 years at the Redemptorists' Immaculate Conception Seminary in Oconomowac, WI and was eventually ordained in 1957.

Shortly thereafter, he was sent as a missionary to Brazil, serving parishes in Belen and Manacaparu. He also made several trips a year by boat up the Amazon River to serve native tribes.

Leonard also spent several months at the University of Wisconsin, learning about cooperatives and later formed a cooperative at Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Belen.

Upon his return to the States, Leonard received his Masters in Sociology from St. Louis University in 1973 and was also laicized that same year.

He received his Doctorate of Education from Indiana University in Bloomington and utilized a population from Central State Hospital in Indianapolis as the subject of his dissertation, and stayed on there in the Staff Development Department for 15 years. During that time he received his LPN Degree from Light Career Center, and his RN degree from Marian College, both in Indianapolis. He worked briefly at both the Indianapolis VA Hospital, and Methodist Hospital in the Pulmonary Dept.

Leonard and family moved to Cape Cod in 1989. He was the night nursing supervisor at Barnstable County Hospital for several years, until it was nearing its closure. He later became the CNA instructor at the Greenery Rehabilitation Center in Hyannis. He also worked as a weekend nursing supervisor at Windsor Nursing Home. Eventually, he retired from nursing in 2001 when the family purchased the J.D. Starr Motel in Dennis and renaming it Kingfisher Lodging.

He was a member of St. Pius Church in South Yarmouth, and was involved with the building campaign for the school. He also performed in several musicals organized by the music ministry. He was a daily communicant for many years.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Fisher of Yarmouth Port, his son Dr. Timothy Fisher and his wife Almira Hamirani and their daughter Kyah Fisher of Houston, TX. Also, his siblings Mike, Grace, and Bill of Kansas and George of Montana. He was predeceased by Abe, Marian and Tom of Kansas, Delbert of Alabama, and Father Kyle Fisher of Missouri.

Always eager to make people laugh and smile, Leonard will be greatly missed by all of those that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Public services to be held at St. Pius X Church in South Yarmouth, MA on September 20, 2024 at 10:30 a.m.
