Jon Konetski Obituary

In Loving Memory of Jon Konetski
August 19, 1956 – March 3, 2025

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of our dear brother, and cherished friend, Jon Konetski. Jon left this world on March 3, 2025, in Oakland, California, leaving behind a legacy of grace, kindness, and artistry that will forever remain in our hearts.

Born on August 19, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas, Jon spent his early years in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, where he cultivated his curiosity and passion for the arts. After graduating from Trinity High School in Shiremanstown, Jon attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania for two years before following his true calling—dance.

Jon’s talent and dedication led him to an extraordinary career in ballet. Beginning with the Germantown Dance Theatre in Philadelphia, he graced stages while honing his craft.  He added guest appearances with Pennsylvania Ballet to his resume before making the pivotal move to the San Francisco Bay Area. There, he danced for Marin County Ballet and ultimately found his home with the Oakland Ballet, where he became a lead male dancer, captivating audiences across the country and around the world.

Jon’s talent extended far beyond technical brilliance, as a partner he offered choreographic precision along with emotional support. His colleagues often spoke of his calm presence and his quiet encouragement, the twinkle in his eye reminding them to embrace the joy of dance.

After time with Richmond Ballet in Virginia, Jon shared his gift through teaching young dancers in the Richmond school district.  Upon returning to the Bay Area, he continued performing with various dance companies including Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, and the San Francisco Opera.

After retiring from dance, Jon transitioned to a successful career in high-end retail, excelling as a top salesperson at Versace before joining Neiman Marcus. His warmth and honesty earned him a devoted clientele and lasting friendships.

Jon’s spirit was one of generosity, kindness, and humor, a rare gift that left an imprint on everyone he met. He was the kind of friend who would call just to check in, the one who would always be there, and the kind of person who turned every gathering into a moment of joy. Whether celebrating his birthday at the Russian River, vacationing with friends at Sea Ranch, or simply sharing a walk around Lake Merritt, Jon was always the heart of the moment, filling every space with laughter and love.

A talented pottery artist, Jon crafted pieces as beautiful and unique as his soul. His passion for dance never faded—he continued attending performances, sharing his love of the art, and took classes in his free time.

Jon is survived by his loving siblings—Doris Murphy, Mark Konetski, Marian Walter, and David Konetski—as well as countless dear friends who became his extended family. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit dances on in the lives he touched, the art he created, and the memories we hold dear.

Jon, you were a light in all of our lives. We will carry your laughter, your kindness, and your unwavering love with us always.

A celebration of Jon’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you honor Jon’s memory by supporting the arts, sharing a dance, or simply showing kindness to someone in need—just as he always did.
