Robert Carroll Blain passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at the age of 79. Bob was born in Tonasket, Washington on December 8, 1944 to Robert Elmo Blain and Islay Mary (Carroll) Blain. He grew up in Republic, Washington and attended Washington State University, from which he graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. A resident of Emeryville, CA for more than 50 years, Bob retired from Chevron in the 1990s after an engineering career that took him to Alaska, Africa, South America and the Middle East, among many other places. Bob lived a very active life and grew up playing baseball, basketball and tennis. He also loved skiing, cycling, and sailing on his sailboat “Islay” in the San Francisco Bay.
Bob was very proud of his nieces and nephews who all recall fond memories starting from childhood into adulthood, whether it was taking ski trips with him in Idaho, teaching them how to sail in the Bay, cycling through San Francisco, and enjoying long distance journeys. He loved his home at Watergate where he lived for the past several decades. He spent many a night at his favorite restaurant Townhouse where he could be found socializing with many of his friends. He loved sports cars and especially enjoyed driving his beloved classic 1967 Sunbeam Tiger. Bob was an avid reader and prided himself on reading the San Francisco Chronicle every morning to keep up with the latest news.
Bob is survived by his nephews, Edward (Laurie) Blain of Edmonds, Washington and Bob Girsberger of Portland, Oregon; and his nieces Angela Rowbotham of Spokane, Washington and Mary (Michael) Acquanita of Laguna Niguel, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank Blain and his sister Kay Girsberger.
Uncle Bob, you will be greatly missed.
